ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുട ക്രൈസ്റ്റ് കോളേജിലെ മോൻസി വിൻസെന്റും ജോണ്‍ തോമസ്സും 2011-ൽ Ichthyological Research-ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച "Observations on the foraging behaviour of a subterranean fish Monopterus digressus (Synbranchiformes: Synbranchidae)" എന്ന ലേഖനത്തിൽ ഭൂമിക്കടിയിൽ ജീവിക്കാനും ഇര പിടിക്കാനുമായി ഈ മത്സ്യങ്ങൾ എന്തെല്ലാം കഴിവുകൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് വിശദമായി പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

2, Does coloured gravel available to use in the tank(ex blue green etc) anyway effect the life span of fish ?

3, i found that there are some small snail kind creatures in my aquarium. How can i remove them other than hand picking it.?

    2. Hello,

      1. Did you mean parrot cichlid and moonlight gourami?

      2. Coloured gravel/pebbles can be used in aquarium tank as long as those are of good quality and the colour do not leach into water after prolonged contact.

      3. Please attach a photo so that we can make sure its snail or not before answering your question.

Yes parrot cichild and this one (Marble gourami i beleive http://www.aquamir63.ru/_pu/2/25007008.jpg). Also just want to know whether this type of gourimi is a kind of shy type as most of the time they are hiding behind water purifier and aquarium decoration items.

    1. 1. The link you gave is of blue gourami. They are not shy type. When a little bigger, they can be aggressive. A single male should be housed with 2-3 females to reduce aggression. On the other hand, parrot cichlid due to the deformity in the mouth is unable to aggressively attck other fish. So your gourami might harass parrot cichlid. If you are keeping red parrot cichlid, they are not at all aggressive. We have housed them even with goldfishes. But that might be an exception. Since we do not know the sizes of your fish, at this point we would advise you to carefully observe the fishes for any form of aggression.

      2. From the photo it looks like a malayan trumpet snail. They would have arrived in your aquarium when you purchased fishes or plants. They are not aggressive and do not even eat the plants. Infact they are supposed to be helpful in a planted aquarium. They eat the debris and thereby reduce the excess food which could otherwise rot and become harmful to fishes. If they are very few in number, you dont have to worry. They usually forage during the night. If you switch on the light aquarium in the middle of the night, you can see them all over crawling on the glass. They prefer to hide in the gravel during daytime. If you think they are breeding excessively in the tank, you need to reduce the food you are giving to the fishes. If it is still uncontrollable, you could put a blanched piece of cucumber in the tank during evening and take it out in the night when it is fully covered with snails. You could throw them away or gift to other hobbyists. We always prefer a population of these snails thriving in our aquarium which makes the conditions more healthy.
